Finding Reference for Visual Development

Before jumping into designs it extremely useful to first go digging for some reference to draw inspiration from.

So I first started searching for reference images for the sea turtle, the shark, the submarine, and sea floor images. While I use google images sometimes, I find pinterest the most useful because I can create boards to organize my pins. But be careful, it’s SO easy to lose track of time when searching for reference images. Try to give yourself a time limit.

When designing creatures it's also important to at least have a basic understanding of the anatomy of the real thing, so make sure to pull some images from real life too.

Around this time I also start thinking about what color palette I want to use. I looked for underwater steampunk paintings, and other examples of underwater palettes.

Armed with what I've found, I then put together a reference board for each subject. Here are some examples of what I found for the turtle.

Time to start designing the turtle!
