Loglines are important before you start writing. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the term, a logline is your story summarized in one to two sentences.
Loglines are important because:
They force you to nail down and distill what your story is and who it’s about.
Having one to refer back to also helps you not to lose sight of what your story is truly about while writing.
Some goals to shoot for in your logline (and thus your story) are a flawed hero, conflict, irony, subtext, and stakes.
Here’s one for my story:
When an overconfident baby turtle mistakes you for his daddy’s killer, you must convince him otherwise before the Boogie Woogie eats you both.
But often the fewer words the better. Here’s a less specific logline but more to the point:
An overconfident baby turtle confronts the shark that ate his daddy.
Next time we'll start our story outline!
